Taking Flight

Compared with most birds, Barn Owls have a very low wing loading (large wings supporting a lightweight body). This means they are able to fly very slowly without stalling and hover in only the slightest lift (rising air). Slow flight gives the birds ample time to locate and pinpoint prey on the ground below. This low wing loading also contributes to noise reduction by allowing the slow flight. The serrations on the leading edge of the wing and the velvet-like surface have a great impact on noise reduction, making the barn owl a very effective, silent hunter. This image was captured early summer last year during the golden hour via my Canon 5D Mark IV and my Sigma 150 - 600mm lens.
